Hearing Services

Strafford Learning Center (SLC) provides itinerant Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to member and non-member school districts in need of educational support for students who are deaf or hard of hearing ranging from 3-21 years of age. SLC's Teachers of the Deaf offer an expertise on hearing loss and its effects development and the learning process in the areas of: vocabulary development, early reading skills, language processing, auditory rehabilitation and the development of listening skills, development of syntax and morphology skills, social pragmatic language, and the development of self-advocacy skills.

Our Teachers of the Deaf are well trained in their knowledge and understanding of hearing aids, cochlear implants, as well as any other hearing assistive technology systems (HAT systems; formally referred to as FM systems).

Depending on the need of the individual student, we offer:

  • Provide in class support with either a selected student or the entire class, as well as support to the classroom or special education teacher
  • One-to-one direct pull out or small group intervention
  • Consultation and in-service training with school professionals, parents, and students who are unfamiliar
  • Recommendations for appropriate accommodations and assessments to address the effects hearing loss has in a classroom setting in order to support learning needs associated with hearing loss and improve student performance
