Orientation and Mobility

Orientation and mobility instruction is provided to assist students with visual impairments to achieve maximum independence through instruction in safe, efficient travel within the school and community. Instruction in daily living skills, self-advocacy, and recreation or leisure skills, as related to orientation and mobility are considered.

  • Conduct evaluations of the orientation and mobility needs of visually impaired students

  • Develop appropriate orientation and mobility goals and objectives for each IEP

  • Recommend modifications to program or specialized services needed based on the visual impairment

  • Provide direct orientation and mobility instructional services to students with visual impairments and consultation to school staff, peers, and community

Vision Services

Certified Teachers of the Visually Impaired (CTVI) provide services within our own programs and to local schools within our member and non-member districts.

Depending on the needs of the student, The CTVI can provide one or a combination of the following services:

  • Performing functional vision and learning media assessments
  • Interpreting eye examination reports as they relate to educational environments
  • Consulting with team members concerning appropriate evaluations, modification, and test administration
  • Participating in team assessments for students
  • Assisting in determining and procuring classroom equipment and materials
  • Modifying or adapting materials to support students' access to the regular curriculum
  • Assessing school environments
  • Providing in-service education on a variety of topics such as: the impact of vision loss in academic and social environments and adaptations for inclusion of blind and visually impaired students

Certified Assistive Technology Instructional Specialist (CATIS)

A CATIS is a highly trained expert who specializes in working with individuals who are blind or have visual impairments, including students with deafblindness and additional disabilities, empowering them to achieve their goals for education, employment, and independence through the use of assistive technology (AT). 

  • Conduct thorough AT assessments of students with visual impairments
  • Recommend features of technology and the technology tools that meet the individual student needs
  • Provide direct instruction and consultation of both assistive and mainstream technologies
  • Teach strategies and problem-solving skills through the use of a variety of low to high tech AT device
  • Create training materials and provide Inservice trainings for educational teams related to technology for students with visual impairments
