Providing specialized educational programs and services to the children and youth who are a special part of our journey together.

Certified Teachers of the Visually Impaired and Orientation and Mobility Specialists of Strafford Learning Center not only provide services within our own programs, but also extend their experience to local schools within our member and non-member districts. These services include functional vision assessments, low vision screenings, learning medium assessments, direct instruction to students, and consultation with school staff and parents.

Depending on the needs of the student, various specific education models are used. The Teacher of the Visually Impaired provides one or a combination of the following service delivery systems:

 Perform functional vision and learning media assessments.
Interpret eye medical reports as they relate to educational environments.
Consult with diagnosticians, classroom teachers, students, and parents concerning appropriate evaluations, modification, and test administration.
Participate in team assessments for students with cortical vision impairment and moderate to severe cognitive disabilities.
Assist in determining and procuring classroom equipment and materials necessary for the student with visual impairments.
Modifications or adaptations of materials including suggestions for technology applications to support students' access to the regular curriculum.
Assessments of school environments.
In-service education on a variety of topics such as: the impact of vision loss in academic and social environments and adaptations for inclusion of blind and visually impaired students.

Orientation and mobility instruction is provided to assist students with visual impairments to achieve maximum independence through instruction in safe, efficient travel within the school and community. Instruction in daily living skills, self-advocacy, and recreation or leisure skills, as related to orientation and mobility ,are considered in the following service delivery:

Conduct evaluations of the orientation and mobility needs of visually impaired students.
Develop appropriate orientation and mobility goals and objectives for each IEP.
Recommend modifications to program or specialized services needed based on the visual impairment.
Provide direct orientation and mobility instructional services to students with visual impairments and consultation to school staff, peers, and community.
