Strafford Learning Center

Providing specialized educational programs and services to the children and youth who are a special part of our journey together.

NORTH STAR

The Vision:

To negotiate, at the idividual and district level, alternative pathways to school completion so that all students complete a high school education.

The Mission:

The mission of North Star is to prevent students from dropping out of school and to recover students who have dropped out by:

Bullet 1 working directly with students and families in order to attain a meaningful education and a satisfying career
Bullet 2 building our schools' and communities' capacity to engage and retain students at the margin
Bullet 3 being a repository for new thinking on dropout prevention and recovery

The Beliefs:

Bullet 1 Dropping out of school is a problem with living, not a pathology
Bullet 2 Problems with living are often best addressed within the environment in which they arose
Bullet 3 Problems with living result from a mismatch between the unique characteristics of an individual and the settings in which the individual finds himself or herself.
Bullet 4 Encouragement is a fundamental to releasing a student's imagination and creativity in order to negotiate a successful education and career

The Staff:

Bullet 1 Dr. Charles A. Ott: Certified counselor and school psychologist. Retired Superintendent of Schools for SAU 56 (Somersworth/Rollinsford)
Bullet 2 Jill A Heath, MSW: Social worker and educator with experience in public and alternative school settings
