Strafford Learning Center

Providing specialized educational programs and services to the children and youth who are a special part of our journey together.

THE JOHN POWERS SCHOOL

The John Powers School (JPS) of Strafford Learning Center is a specialized learning environment for students who have not achieved academic and social success in a public school setting. JPS provides services for those students identified as having learning problems due to serious emotional/behavioral disorders. Many of our students also have secondary learning problems characterized by learning disabilities, speech and language impairments, and motor difficulties. All of these needs are addressed by educational and related service personnel within the program.

The overall goals and objectives of the The John Powers School Program are:

Bullet 1 to provide individual and group learning experiences helping students improve academic achievement
Bullet 2 to create program structures helping students improve self control and use rule-following behaviors
Bullet 3 to offer teaching practices improving students' social and interpersonal skills
Bullet 4 to foster success-oriented experiences contributing to students' improved self esteem
Bullet 5 to return students to their community schools in an expediant manner with support services in place

The diverse needs of students served in the JPS are met through a variety of instructional strategies including: individualized instruction and assessment; small group instruction; role playing and group processing; direct instruction practices; the use of a cognitive behavioral methodology for teaching new behaviors; and mainstream participation in home schools. Following a recommended discharge, the program provides follow-up consultation by a mainstream coordinator for one school year.

JPS also offers a supportive summer program for students in grades one through six.
